| Projects Sadly, many of Madurai Seeds project have yet to be realised. So far, lack of funding has made this impossible. However, three projects are developing – slowly but steadily. the Thenkoodu Children’s Bank has been set up - a savings bank to help the children learn about the importance of saving and managing money. Likewise, a savings scheme - the Thenkoodu Self-help Group -, has been set up for college students and other young people to meet their most pressing economic needs. In the period of 2007-08 alone Madurai Seed’s young people jointly saved up Rs. 19,000 (approx. CHF 500) while Madurai Seed contributed some interest, thus giving hope to those who most need it. Madurai Seed now has its own library – Senthamizh Library – with books for young people ranging from fiction to philosophy and history, both in Tamil and English. Aiming to promote literacy and good reading habits, it is open to all the children at Madurai Seed during holiday times. Madurai Seed is planning to grow into a more professional organisation. The first steps were taken when, with the help of some Swiss donations, a new office space was found, a second monitor was purchased and a broadband Internet connection was installed. It is now possible for all at Madurai Seed to practise their English with their Swiss friends via Skype! For the future, Madurai Seed is hoping to implement a food supplement programme – to help children get a more balanced nutrition. This will help them perform better at school and grow into healthy young people. Another project yet waiting to be realised is a stipends scheme for students whose parents cannot afford to buy whatever is needed at school. Currently, their support is not guaranteed. Last but not least, Madurai Seed is hoping to build its own centre. It will house the four different educational centres, as well as an office and meeting hall. Rather than in the middle of Karumbalai, it will be situated at its margins, thus offering not just more space but also more quiet, for the children and youngsters to study optimally. The construction of such a building is estimated to amount to approximately 10 Lakh (= CHF 25,000) |
